Vibe coding for beginners, from someone who isn't a developer. The tools, the setup, the security basics, and what to build first as a creator or marketer.

*Suggested image: A non-technical creator using an AI coding assistant to build a simple personal productivity app.*

I'm not a developer, but boy, can I code.

**Vibe code, that is.**

Thanks to the help of several AI coding tools, I’ve built upwards of 10 personal apps and tools in the past year: a step tracking tool, a fitness dashboard, several productivity tools, and a content calendar that plugs straight into Buffer's API.

I’m currently working on an app that will help me cater to the very diverse needs of my harem of houseplants. 🤓

I built all of these things with a couple of different AI coding tools, all of which offer different levels of handholding. These days, I'm super comfortable using Claude Code, GitHub, and the terminal daily.

I will also acknowledge that I had plenty of help. At Buffer, we have dozens of very nice, very helpful engineers who have been unblocking their non-technical peers at every turn. We even had Build Week, a full week outside our regular roles to build a simple tool or workflow with AI.

And before you ask, heck yes — it did feel really, really intimidating at first, even with all the support I had.

But I'm so glad I took the plunge.

Firstly, because it turned out to be *much* easier than I thought it would be, and secondly, because it has opened up a world of possibilities for me and my work.

I know a lot of my creator and marketing peers are still peering down the “how-the-heck-am-I-supposed-to-do-this?” chasm, and I’d really love to help.

Enter: **Vibe Coding for Newbies: The Complete Beginner’s Guide. ™️**

It is not a guide to launching a SaaS company, becoming a developer, or shipping anything production-grade. The frame here is small, useful, personal tools: things that will make your work a little smoother, or even stuff you’ll use with your family.

And, be warned: it covers the unglamorous (but very necessary) scaffolding stuff, too.

Most vibe coding guides stop at "describe what you want to Claude," (it’s a bit more complicated than that — but not much!). Where non-developers actually get stuck is a little further on in the process: where to put your files, when to back things up, and what to check before you put something on the internet.

And I absolutely did ask some of the aforementioned friendly engineers to review this article. So you know you’re in safe hands (thank you, Hamish and Martín!) 👋

By the end of this, you'll have a setup that won't lose your work, and a first project small enough to finish.

**Ready? You got this! Let’s build.**

# What Vibe Coding Is

Vibe coding means describing what you want in plain language so that an AI can write the code. Andrej Karpathy coined the term on X in early 2025, and Collins Dictionary even made it their Word of the Year.

The possibilities for creation are almost dizzying, but my preferred use case thus far has been for me- or team-only tools and workflows. Great power, great responsibility, etc. etc.

I know folks much smarter than me who have vibe-coded customer-facing products, but I’d tread carefully there if you don’t have an engineering background. Just for now. Let’s walk together before we run.

There are also things best avoided when you vibe code, even if they’re only intended for you or a handful of people. For example, handling real money, storing other people's sensitive info, or anything that has to be legally compliant (so nothing medical, nothing financial, nothing with a pile of GDPR obligations attached).

**Start small, and start safe.**

> **IMAGE PLACEHOLDER — Understanding Vibe Coding**
> *Suggested image: A simple visual showing a person describing an idea to an AI coding assistant, which then produces code and a working mini-tool.*

Note that there will probably be a few unfamiliar words in this article. I’ve done my best to explain everything as it comes up, but I’ve also included a handy glossary at the end! Refer there if you need a deeper explainer.

# Where to Vibe Code: The Toolkit You Need

You can vibe code with surprisingly little. But before you decide *how* (the AI tool/s you’ll be building with), you need to decide *where.*

Fun fact: building your own tools doesn’t actually require you to put them on the internet or ‘host’ them somewhere. They can live exclusively on your device (the catch is that you can't easily open them on your phone, and building this way might require a slightly more advanced AI tool).

So with that in mind, you’ve got two options:

## Browser or Laptop

**Browser-based building** means using an online environment where much of the technical setup is handled for you.

This can be an appealing place to start if you're completely new to coding because you don't necessarily need to understand everything happening behind the scenes.

A laptop-based workflow can give you more control over your files, projects, code, version history, and development environment.

Neither approach is automatically better.

For beginners, the best choice is usually the one that makes it easiest to understand what you're building while keeping your work organized and backed up.

>

### The 2 Types of Vibe Coding Tools

AI coding tools generally fall into different levels of assistance.

Some are designed to let you describe an idea and receive a working prototype with minimal technical setup.

Others work more closely with your existing files, terminal, GitHub repositories, and development environment.

For a beginner, the important thing isn't choosing the most advanced tool available.

It's choosing a tool you can actually understand and use consistently.

As your confidence grows, you can gradually introduce more advanced tools into your workflow.

### Other Tools You’ll Need to Vibe Code

Depending on what you're building, you may eventually encounter tools such as:

- An AI coding assistant

- A code editor

- GitHub or another version-control service

- A terminal

- A browser

- Local project folders

- APIs

- Documentation

- Backup tools

Don't let that list intimidate you.

You don't need to master everything before starting.

One of the advantages of AI-assisted coding is that you can ask questions as you encounter unfamiliar concepts.

The goal isn't to pretend you're a developer.

The goal is to become capable of **building, testing, understanding, and improving small useful things.**

> [![AI Consultancy](https://skmarketsinc.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Business-Consulting-AI-Workspace.webp)](https://skmarketsinc.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Business-Consulting-AI-Workspace.webp)Set Yourself Up Properly

One of the easiest mistakes for a new vibe coder is to focus entirely on getting something to work and forget about what happens afterward.

Where are your files?

How are you backing them up?

Can you return to an earlier version if something breaks?

Do you know which files contain sensitive information?

Before you start building, create a simple system for organizing your projects.

For example, give each project its own folder and use clear names for files.

Back up important work regularly.

If you're using GitHub or another version-control system, learn enough about it to understand what you're saving and how you can return to an earlier version.

You don't need to become a Git expert on day one.

You simply need to avoid the nightmare scenario where your project works beautifully on Monday and disappears on Tuesday.

### A Simple Beginner Rule

**If something matters, keep a backup.**

AI can generate code quickly, but that doesn't mean every generated change is correct.

Save working versions.

Test changes one step at a time.

And don't delete something that works until you know you can recover it.

---

# Prompting When You Vibe Code: Best Practices

The quality of your instructions has a major effect on the quality of the result.

Instead of telling an AI:

> “Build me a productivity app.”

Give it context.

Explain:

- What you want to build

- Who will use it

- What the tool should do

- What information it should store

- What the interface should look like

- What should happen when someone clicks a button

- What you don't want it to do

- What platform you're using

- What you already have working

You can also ask the AI to explain its decisions.

That is especially useful when you're learning.

### Start Small

Don't ask an AI coding tool to build your entire dream application in one enormous prompt.

Break the project into small steps.

For example:

**Step 1:** Create the basic page.

**Step 2:** Add the input form.

**Step 3:** Save the information.

**Step 4:** Display the information.

**Step 5:** Add editing and deletion.

**Step 6:** Test the workflow.

**Step 7:** Improve the design.

This approach makes mistakes easier to identify and fix.

> *Suggested image: A creator typing a detailed prompt into an AI coding assistant with the resulting interface visible beside it.*

## What About Coding Languages?

Here's another area where beginners can easily become overwhelmed.

You may encounter terms such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, SQL, APIs, frameworks, libraries, and databases.

You don't need to learn everything immediately.

Your AI coding assistant can explain what each technology does and why it is being used.

However, don't make the mistake of blindly accepting every suggestion.

Ask questions.

If the AI says you need a particular technology, ask:

**“Why do I need this?”**

Then ask:

**“Is there a simpler way to accomplish the same thing?”**

Learning enough terminology to understand the conversation between you and your AI coding assistant will make you much more effective.

---

# Security: What Non-Developers Need to Be Aware Of

Security is one area where beginners should slow down.

AI can generate code that looks convincing and still contains security problems.

Never assume that because an AI generated something, it must be safe.

Be particularly careful with:

- Passwords

- API keys

- Payment information

- Personal information

- Customer information

- Authentication

- Databases

- File uploads

- Public-facing applications

Never casually paste secret keys or passwords into an AI conversation.

Don't put private credentials directly into publicly accessible code.

And don't publish an application simply because it works on your computer.

Before putting something online, understand what information it collects, who can access it, and where that information is stored.

For anything involving significant financial transactions, sensitive personal information, healthcare, legal compliance, or other high-risk data, get qualified professional technical and legal advice.

**Start small. Start safe. Learn as you go.**

# Vibe Coding Ideas: What to Build First

The best first project isn't necessarily the most impressive one.

It's the one you can actually finish.

Think about something you do repeatedly.

Maybe you:

- Track your workouts

- Organize content ideas

- Manage a personal reading list

- Plan social media posts

- Track household tasks

- Organize recipes

- Keep a simple budget

- Track projects

- Manage a content calendar

- Create checklists

- Store research notes

These are excellent candidates for small AI-assisted projects.

For creators and marketers, there are particularly interesting possibilities.

You could build a simple content planning tool, an idea generator, a campaign checklist, a headline organizer, a social media planning dashboard, or a personal research assistant.

The key is to solve **one small problem**.

Don't try to build the next billion-dollar platform on your first weekend.

Build something you'll actually use on Monday.

# Build Skills, Then Build Opportunities

Learning to use AI coding tools doesn't mean you have to become a professional software developer.

It means you can become more capable of turning ideas into useful digital tools.

That distinction matters.

A creator who can describe a problem clearly, work with AI, test the result, recognize obvious risks, and improve a workflow has a powerful new capability.

Combine that with digital marketing knowledge and you have even more possibilities.

You can create content systems.

You can experiment with landing pages.

You can build internal tools.

You can prototype ideas.

You can automate repetitive tasks.

And you can learn by actually building.

# Final Thoughts

You don't have to be a developer to start building.

You don't need to understand every programming language.

You don't need an enormous project.

And you definitely don't need to know everything before you begin.

Start with one small problem.

Describe it clearly.

Let AI help you build.

Test what it creates.

Back up your work.

Learn from your mistakes.

And keep improving.

The most important part isn't becoming an expert overnight.

It's discovering that you can build something you once assumed was beyond your reach.
