Bring on the blues! While this spring has been a bit of a bust for highway bluebonnets due to the ongoing drought, a glorious, bumper-crop oasis is hiding just an hour northwest of Austin.

Word got out this week about an incredible patch of Texas bluebonnets in full bloom at Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area in Spicewood. We quickly texted some friends, packed into the car, and made a spontaneous Wednesday evening road trip.

We arrived just before the golden hour. It may have been April Fools’ Day, but it was absolutely no joke—the bluebonnets were amazing! The moment I stepped out of the car, their sweet fragrance washed over me. Honestly, I hadn’t smelled a bluebonnet field that rich and sweet since the legendary bumper-crop fields of 2010.

Exploring the Stunning Bluebonnet Fields of Muleshoe Bend

A steady breeze kept the fields alive, making each flower wave a friendly hello. Beyond the rolling fields of indigo, Lake Travis curves beautifully along the ridge, adding its own deep line of blue to the horizon.

Golden Hour Magic and Quiet Crowds

Because it was a weekday evening, we lucked out with minimal crowds. It was pure joy just to sit back and watch other visitors delighting in the flowers:

• Pet-Friendly Photos: Plenty of families were making memories, capturing adorable Easter photos with their pups nestled safely in the blooms.

• Vibrant Contrast: The bluebonnets sparkled with white-tipped indigo flower spikes, looking exactly like whitecaps on a blue lake.

• Nature’s Color Blocking: Here and there, the fresh flowers mingled with last season’s golden grasses. Along the lake shore, a stand of willows stood bare—creating a striking color block of tan against the vibrant greens and blues.

Meanwhile, birds shot past like brown torpedoes. Cedar waxwings, perhaps? It was an absolute picture-perfect, iconic Texas spring scene.

You can’t visit a superbloom without taking a few photos! We snapped a couple of selfies in the ‘bonnets, but our friends, Cat and Derrick, took it to the next level by demonstrating a much more vigorous bluebonnet pose.

Not to be outdone, David and Derrick leaped so high they got all the way up into the blue sky. Now that is true bluebonnet enthusiasm! And honestly, why not? Just look at this view, and imagine that sweet, intoxicating floral fragrance washing over you.

Twilight Over Lake Travis

As the sun finally set, the vivid blues of the field began to deepen into twilight. A quick 360-degree turn revealed rolling Texas hills in the distance and iconic live oaks standing guard along the road.
